ART Gado Gado
Expressions of Indonesian Diaspora
On view February 22 — March 22, 2025
Art GADO GADO is a juried art exhibition celebrating the diversity of artistic expressions, stories, and identities of the Indonesian diaspora in California. We aim to draw artists of Indonesian descent into closer community with one another, gathering and celebrating art from across our archipelago of experiences.
Gado gado is a nourishing salad of many different ingredients, covered in a delicious peanut sauce. Just as gado gado is made of eclectic ingredients, we affirm that there are countless unique ways to exist as part of this diaspora community–all of them are healing and necessary.
We uplift art about Indonesian themes, art made using Indonesian techniques, or work by Indonesian diaspora artists that is independent of any obvious Indonesian reference.
ART Gado Gado is a celebration of all of our experiences, and we seek to bring a wide breadth of work into community through this exhibition.
An archipelago is an exercise in willpower and imagination. The wildly diverse islands of Indonesia are joined together through the willful belief in their common project. Similarly, we believe that we can build solidarity with one another by gathering our disparate artistic practices, our disparate identities together into this exhibition space.
Featuring 22 artists, musicians, and writers of the Indonesian diaspora, the ART Gado Gado exhibit will run for four weeks (February 22 — March 22, 2025).
